In today's world climate, with many unstable countries stretching beyond
their financial limits to join the nuclear elite and terrorists grabbing
any opportunity to create a nuclear disaster in their self defined bulls
eye, it seems almost inevitable that a dirty bomb or nuclear weapon will
go off somewhere in the world within the next decade. How did we get to
this point as a planet? Are these weapons more of a help or a hindrance
to world peace? As one of the main holders, and the only user of these
weapons, what is the United States' role in creating this world as we
see it today?
Karl is uniquely qualified to address these questions. As a naive young
lad fresh out of high school, he joined the Navy and was set on a course
that eventually placed him in one of the hot-seats of the Cold War,
maintaining and preparing nuclear missiles for launch from a submarine
deep under the world's oceans. The truth of these experiences have been
shrouded in secrecy for decades. Now that the original 41 missile carrying
submarines have been removed from service, these secrets are starting to
become declassified, and the history that has been hidden beneath the
ocean all these years is starting to surface.
Slowly awakening to the seriousness of the position for which he was being
groomed, he transitioned from pride and excitement about the trust his
government had in him to trepidation, depression, nightmares, and attempted
suicide, which he managed to keep hidden from his superiors for several years.
Probing the Deep is one man's attempt to make sense of the role he played in
the Cold War. It is Karl's attempt to tell his story and bring clarity to some
unresolved questions about the position he held, the mission he might have been
asked to carry out, and the nightmares that continued for years thereafter.
Bracing action will have the readers swallowing hard while they experience
several close calls with death. They will walk with Karl as he questions both his
Christian faith and his place in the insanity of nuclear deterrence. Readers
will be spectators to the end of the Cold War. They will bear witness to his
attempted suicide, a powerful encounter with God, and his eventual recovery from
depression after leaving the Navy.
Join the journey, probing the deep through the eyes of this cold war submariner.
